Oconee demonstrates need to expand landfill

Word from Columbia is that Oconee County has demonstrated the need to be allowed to expand its commercial and demolition landfill at Seneca. It’s another step in a lengthy process to expand the landfill by 75 acres, according to Swain Stihl, director county solid waste. Once the Department of Health and Environmental Control decision is final, an engineering firm will be free to design the project. That’s another phase that must be submitted to the state for approval. The current landfill has a remaining life capacity of seven years. The state held a public hearing earlier this year at Seneca High School but it was an exercise that featured very little comment from the public.
