Oconee conservation leaders attend meeting

Commissioners of Oconee Soil and Water Conservation recently attended a conference in Charleston that included state DNR and Natural Resource Service officials.  A highlight was a tour of St. James Island.  The South Carolina coast has a 90% oyster bed restoration rate, and the state is considered number one in restoring habitats to ensure oysters in the future.  The local  nonprofit OPUS Trust took part in such a restoration project after a recent oyster roast fundraiser for the project to restore the Salem auditorium.  The oysters that evening came from the Louisiana Bay area, but the shells went to the South Carolina coast.
