November ballot contains statewide constitutional amendment

In November General Election voting, South Carolinians will choose a state superintendent of education between Republican incumbent Molly Spearman and Democrat Israel Romero. The winner will serve until the year 2023. Depending on how South Carolinians vote elsewhere on the November ballot, this could be the last time the people elect the superintendent. The one statewide constitutional question before the voters November 6 is whether to allow the governor, with the consent of the senate, to choose future superintendents starting in January 2023. A “Yes” vote will require the superintendent to be appointed; a “No” vote maintains the current way of electing a superintendent. State Senator Thomas Alexander says this is a question for the people to decide.
