No outdoor burning in Walhalla allowed

Walhalla Fire Department cautions the public that no outdoor burning is permitted inside the corporate limits until there’s a let-up in the dry weather. Chief Brandon Burton says residents outside the corporate limits inside the city protection zone are encouraged from doing any outdoor burning.  “Wind bursts can carry embers into vegetation that has been dried by low humidity and high temperatures.  Fire behavior can be erratic during this time,” says Burton.  A Walhalla area farmer predicted to 101.7/WGOG NEWS that, in spite of the wet winter months, our area likely will be in a drought by July 4.  The excessive, heat, and dry condition statewide are forcing the state drought committee into action this week.  They will meet Thursday by conference call.
