New trail opens at Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park

A state senator, a mayor, and a county councilman stood in the middle of a long line of dignataries as a ribbon was cut to officially open phase two of the Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park. Young men at the wheel of three fast-moving bikes were forced to suddenly brake to avoid banging into them. It’s a sign that local mountain bike riding is gaining in popularity. A large crowd gathered for the opening yesterday of a second trail. It’s just another in the effort by Walhalla and the Palmetto Conservation Foundation to connect the bike park with the Oconee State Park on one side and the city of Walhalla on another. City councilman Josh Roberts is an avid bike rider and looks forward some day to a Palmetto Trail extension into downtown Walhalla.
