New school district statement on threat investigations

Here’s a new statement released yesterday by Oconee public schools:  “Late on Monday, September 9th, Walhalla High School was made aware that a student made threatening statements during class on Monday.  School administrators worked with the school resource officer and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office to thoroughly investigate the situation.  The parents of the student were notified of the allegations Monday evening and the student did not attend class at any point on Tuesday, September 10th.  The student was detained by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office this morning and has been charged with making school threats.  School administrators learned of this information from another student and we commend that student for doing exactly what we ask of our students – to tell an adult if they have any concerns over statements made by other students or posts they see on social media. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THIS SITUATION WAS COMPLETELY UNRELATED TO THE RUMORS CIRCULATING FRIDAY AND MONDAY. THOSE SITUATIONS WERE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED AND WERE FOUND TO BE FALSE.” The district summarizes the previous incidents from the past few days this way:

“Monday, September 9th – Walhalla High School – situation was investigated and it was determined to be a rumor; no credible information was found to support the possibility of a threat.

West-Oak High School – situation was investigated and it was determined to be a rumor; no credible information was found to support the possibility of a threat.

Walhalla Middle School – a situation was investigated and a student was detained by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and charged with making school threats.

Friday, September 6th – Walhalla High School – situation was investigated and it was determined to be a rumor; no credible information was found to support the possibility of a threat.”
