Nearly 3 of 4 eligible Oconeeans turn out

Oconee officials marveled over the county’s participation in the 2020 General Election.  Vote tallies last night showed 72.69% of eligible Oconeeans cast ballots – whether they voted by mail, by in-person absentee, or by showing up yesterday at their polling places.  If that percentage holds, it’ll reflect an increase of about five percent from 2016.  The county’s voters delivered winning percentages of 70% plus for candidates such as President Trump, Senator Graham, and U-S Rep. Duncan.  A pair of Oconee school trustee positions was at stake yesterday, and the results gave challenger Meghan Ketterman the District #2 seat, with a 65-34% percentage spread over the incumbent Joe Rukat.  Incumbent Buddy Herring won a three-way contest in District 5, with 41.7%.  Earnestine Williams placed second with 29%.  Sammy Grant tallied 28.5%.  All numbers announced last night remain unofficial until the county board of canvassers meets Friday.  However, there do not appear to be enough challenged ballots in question to change any of the outcomes.
