Mildred Patterson

Seneca – Mildred Nix Patterson, 95, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2022 at her residence.

In the time of a pandemic, we’re all familiar with the term essential worker and honestly that’s the best way to describe Mildred Patterson. She was essential to us all.  She was a teacher of hard life lessons (don’t make promises you can’t keep). She was a fashion critic (make sure you match, and always bring a jacket to the grocery store). She knew everything there was to know about gardening (check the signs before you plant). She was a fantastic cook who caused many of us to risk sneaking out of bed at night for second or third helpings of potato casserole. She held the secret to making a truly fantastic, rich, red velvet cake (tap the sides to get rid of bubbles) as well making the best biscuits in the South (use whole wheat flour). She could stop a person in their tracks with one raised eyebrow and convey paragraphs of information with the word “well.”

She was predeceased by her parents, James Pinkney Nix and Rossie Eugenia Burns as well as her brothers, Raymond Edward Nix, James Junior Nix, Charles Rodrick Nix, Mannon Edward Nix, and Tommy Blease Nix, as well as her husband Ralph Henry Patterson and son Felix Patterson.

She is survived by daughter Dorothy Patterson McCarley and her husband Leo McCarley, son Marty Patterson and companion Cheryl Summers, and daughter Robin Patterson; 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

95 years somehow weren’t enough. We’re grateful for everything you taught us. We promise to bake well, learn to root plants with a glass of water and a windowsill, and never, ever, go in public in sweatpants.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm, Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at Oconee Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with entombment to follow service.  The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm prior to the service at the Mausoleum Chapel of Oconee Memorial Park.
