Men’s over-confidence leads to unnecessary drownings

Nearly 9 of 10 drownings in Army Corps of Engineers’ lakes are adult men and, the government says, it seems that arrogance leads to drownings in many cases.  The men mistakenly think they can swim and make lame excuses–such as life jackets are uncomfortable or unflattering.  In the Savannah District lakes last year in Georgia and South Carolina, there were eight drownings.  “Men are basically the worst when it comes to water safety according to our statistics,” said Tom Conning, spokesman.  The Savannah District’s eight drownings in 2021 were at two of the reservoirs — Hartwell near Anderson and Augusta, Georgia.  To promote water safety, the Corps’ Life Jacket Loaner Program is available at many of its recreation areas.
