McCall decries the cutback in valuable community service

Have you seen the mobile health clinic make its way into Oconee County of late? A county councilman says those opportunities are dwindling—the result of a cutback in state funds. District Two’s Wayne McCall says budget cuts on the state level have led Clemson University’s Joseph Sullivan Center to cut back from four to two days a month the days that the clinic sets up in Oconee as a service to low income and the elderly who have trouble paying for medical care. And McCall believes mis-guided priorities are to blame. “People just can’t afford health care. We are ignoring that,” McCall said today. What rankles the outspoken McCall is that a letter which, at his request, was sent by Council Clerk Katie Smith to local mayors and state lawmakers elicited no response. He says he’s particularly disappointed that no mayor responded, especially considering that mayors have contact with members of their communities who can’t afford the costs of today’s medical care.
