Mark Black

Mark Barry Black, 61, of Westminster passed away November 4, 2019, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born to the late Clyde and Hattie Black on April 26, 1958.

 

A native of Westminster, Mr. Black attended College Street and played football for the Westminster High School Trojans (#50), graduating in 1976. He was one of 2 in the state to receive the Coastguard Academy scholarship for his performance on the field.  Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Navy to be stationed aboard the USS Hunley (AS-31) reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

 

After his service, he came back to Westminster and later began his engineering career rising to the position of senior engineer at Sandvik (formerly Valentine) retiring with 32 years.

Mr. Black was a multitalented musician who specialized on the banjo and met his wife while performing with the Heaven’s Echoes. He loved bluegrass music and continued to play until his death.

 

He is survived by his cherished and loving wife of 28 years, Annette H. Black formerly of Lake City FL; sons Wesley Scott Black (Megan Vaughan) and Cory Daniel Black of Westminster; Daughter Ariel Ashley Black of Rock Hill, SC; and four beautiful granddaughters Ruby Black, Brooks Black, Zinnia Black, & Chaily Black;

Brother Rev. Steve Black (Pam Galloway) of Walhalla; Sister Kathy Black Isom (Manny) of Westminster.

 

 He is processed in death by his parents and sister Sandy Gay Black

 

A private graveside service will be held Thursday, November 7, 2019 10:00 A.M. for immediate family and close friends’ invitation only.  A public memorial celebration of life service will be at Clearmont Baptist Church Westminster, SC, Nov. 7, 2019 at 4:00 P.M.
