Margaret Brown, a supporter of the arts

Oconee school trustees recognized Margaret Brown for her longstanding support of arts education.  Brown is the widow of James Brown, a former county superintendent, and her family has long supported the arts in the county district.  The James M. Brown Scholarship for the Arts was established in 1995.  Since then, 28 high school seniors received the scholarship.  In recent years, the value of the scholarship was increased to $2 thousand a year.  At least four of those winners returned to Oconee to teach in the schools.  Two years ago, in the 25th year of the scholarship, Mrs. Brown and the scholarship committee decided to end the scholarship and transfer the remaining funds to for use in the district visual arts department.
