Mandatory furloughs for university workers

Rank-and-file Clemson University employees, including certain athletic department employees, are headed into mandatory furloughs that are to start Tuesday, September 1 and continue for the remainder of the calendar year.  Ongoing financial impacts felt by the university is the explanation for the move.  According to the Clemson announcement, the number of furlough days an employee must take is determined by their salaries.  About one-half of the full-time workforce statewide will be affected.  Additionally, President James Clements and all athletics employees making more than $400,000 annually have voluntarily taken at least 10% pay cuts.  Those affected by the furloughs will continue to receive health care, retirement and other benefits and will be credited for their state employee service time.
