Lewis “Lew” Jaynes

Lewis “Lew” Augustus Jaynes, 82, of 207 Walhalla St., Westminster, SC, died after a recent illness at Prisma Health – Greenville Hospital on Sunday, July 25, 2021. Born a twin on August 30, 1938, in Walhalla, SC, Lew lived his entire life in Oconee County.  He was retired owner/operator of Lew Jaynes Insulation, having “baptized” hundreds of homes with insulation over the past several decades.  Never meeting a stranger, Lew was known far and wide for his dry sense of humor, often calling you “Son,” and a never-ending source of encouragement.  He was a legendary storyteller.  You would be hard pressed to find a bigger Clemson Tiger fan.

Lew Jaynes was a Walhalla High School Razorback football star, even being named MVP in a loss to rival Seneca in 1955.  A full football scholarship to Clemson was offered from Coach Frank Howard but was humbly refused so Lew could help support his family.  He entered the U.S. Army in 1956, and remained in the Army Reserves following his discharge.  He enjoyed clogging and square dancing and was a regular caller of square dances at Oconee State Park for many years.  He was a faithful member of Westminster Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Hughes Jaynes, of the home, children:  Luanne (Rusty) Nuttall of Townville, SC; Suzanne (Wes) Turton of Columbus, GA; Richard (Shannon) Jaynes of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Chip (Caroline) Snellings of Iva, SC; William Turton of Washington, DC; Lillian Nuttall of Townville, SC; John Turton of Columbus, GA; Lewis and Patton Jaynes of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Joretta Jaynes Hood, Lois Jaynes Flanagan (deceased) and Camilla Jaynes McCracken of Walhalla, SC; brother, Roscoe Jaynes of Laurens, SC; along with many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at Ramsey Creek Preserve in Westminster, SC.  Receiving of friends will be at Westminster Baptist Church fellowship hall on Saturday, July 31st, from 1-2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials in Lew’s memory be made to Upstate Forever, 507 Pettigru St., Greenville, SC, 29601, as suggested by Ramsey Creek Preserve.  A message of condolence may be written to the family by visiting www.sandiferfuneralhome.com.
