Lawmaker opines on the state’s Heritage law

In recent days, requests have arisen to rename a Clemson landmark and move a Walhalla Civil War memorial.  To accomplish one or both, state legislative action would be required.  Today the Oconee-Pickens senator, Thomas Alexander, made known his views as one lawmaker who would cast a vote.  While he does not say how he would vote if the issues were before him today, Alexander casts doubt on whether there would enough votes to achieve a necessary two-thirds approval to allow one or both  The Clemson University Board of Trustees wants to rename its Tillman Hall to the “Main” building.  Governor Ben Tillman, while acknowledged as instrumental in the forming of  Clemson College, was considered one of the state’s harshest segregationists.  Nor does Alexander, at this time, consider sufficient reason for re-locating Walhalla’s Main Street memorial to an alternate location.  Earlier this week Walhalla experienced five days of protests and counter protests.  Alexander’s comments can be heard today on 101.7/WGOG NEWS.
