In old days you could watch movies from your car

A question from a listener got us to thinking here about something we had only heard about in the past, and only heard very little. The listener’s question wanted to know the name of a drive-in movie theatre that operated in the 1950s on SC 183/the Walhalla-Westminster Highway. It took a few phone calls to find the answer. Reading from one of Ashton Hester’s books on local history, John Oakley said the answer is “The Mountain View Drive-In Theatre.” The drive-in was located not far from WGOG on the property where a large white manufacturing-type building sits. Oakley didn’t need Hester’s book to jog his memory. He grew up in the area and used to be a patron of the drive-in. Quoting from Hester’s book, Oakley said the theatre opened in October 1949 with much anticipation. It’s believed the outdoor theatre opened with “Pursuit”—a movie starring Robert Mitchum and Teresa Wright.
