Housing to replace old textile building

A Greenville-based developer sees potential in the former textile mill community of Newry. M-Peters Group plans to re-develop the old mill, closed 45 years ago, along with the general store into 197 apartment units, a grocery store, café, event venue and an expanded post office.  The developers are also planning nature trails, a pedestrian bridge, wildlife habitat restoration, a public greenspace, and a public kayak input.  According to the Peters Group, construction will start this summer with the help of Triangle Construction Company and other professional companies. They are touting this Newry project will create about 600 jobs and 60 permanent jobs.  The announcement comes two days after Oconee County Council gave final approval to a $20 million tax credit agreement to the May Corporation of Greenville for Newry re-devlopment.
