Historic site to be added in Oconee in September

The anniversary of an infamous day in America will serve as the official opening of a new Oconee County tourist attraction.  Brandon Shirley is announcing 10 o’clock Saturday morning, September 11 as dedication day for the county’s memorial to honor those killed by the commandeered airplanes that crashed at the three U-S locations, now 20 years ago.  Shirley and others have spent years acquiring debris from the crash sites and finding land on which to build the memorial.  And, now all these years later, there’s little left to be completed on property made available by the county school district on SC 183/N. Catherine Street, Walhalla, in front of the middle school.  It’s been a partnership between the 9-11 committee and the public schools for education purposes.  The memorial is designed to educate future generations about the three thousand people killed in 2001 in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in a field in western Pennsylvania.
