High School student-athlete compensation

A Supreme Court ruling three years ago created a sea change in collegiate athletics, as collegiate student-athletes now taking advantage of NIL — name, image, and likeness. Although still considered amateurs, the collegiate student-athletes, many of them, are profiting from name, image, and likeness.  In many states, but not South Carolina, high school student-athletes are also qualified for compensation.  For South Carolina to qualify, according to an Oconee School District administrator, there must be action by the South Carolina High School League.  According to Steve Hanvey, there have been strong rumblings that the state’s high school student-athletes will eventually qualify, and it could happen soon.  Without it, the associate superintendent of education fears some standout South Carolina high school students will enroll in schools in neighboring Georgia and North Carolina — two of the states that have already adopted NIL for their student-athletes.
