High gas prices won’t keep Carolina motorists at home

The motor club AAA Carolinas predicts that in spite of high gas prices, motorists from both South Carolina and North Carolina will be out during this coming holiday weekend in record high numbers. South Carolina’s $2.63 average today is eight cents higher over the last two weeks and up six cents on the week. Fourteen states now tout an average of $3 dollar or more.  The spokeswoman for the motor club, Tiffany Wright, points to a strong economy and growing consumer confidence to explain why Carolina drivers will be filling up at the pump. The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 24 to Monday, May 28. The holiday weekend also marks the start of the “100 Deadliest Days”—the period when teenager traffic deaths historically rise. “We urge everyone to practice safe behaviors behind the wheel. Eliminate distractions, don’t drink and drive and don’t speed,” Wright said.
