Grass fires ignited by fireworks

Some of those in Oconee in celebration of the country’s birthdate apparently got careless.  At least two grass fires, believed to have been caused last night by fireworks broke out on the Old Clemson Highway near Seneca and on the Pine Grove Road near Townville.  “Great event” is the way Seneca’s celebration at Gignilliat Field is being described.  Several thousands of people are said to have attended.  And the police report no incidents. We have word from the Walhalla police chief that the Independence festival Wednesday finished without incident.  Chief Tim Rice said, “Nice crowd.  Crutchfield band played and we had fireworks around 9:15 pm and the carnival.  Carnival will be in town until Saturday night.”
