Grading imminent for 9-11 memorial

The property set aside for Oconee’s long-planned memorial to 9-11 will likely soon take on the looks of a construction zone, according to project leader Brandon Shirley. The process is underway to obtain the necessary permits, and Shirley hopes grading can start in a few weeks. Contractor for the memorial is the Trehel Corporation. The memorial is planned for the tennis court property made available by the county school district on SC 183/the Walhalla-Pickens Highway. Some of the tennis infrastructure will be salvaged and turned over to the Spindle Tree Racquet Club, Shirley said. Once grading starts, the memorial could be in place in nine weeks depending, in part, on the weather.
