Gerald Foster Davis

Folly Beach, SC – Gerald Foster Davis, 84, of 403 E. Arctic Avenue, Folly Beach, SC, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Roper Hospice Cottage in Charleston, SC.

 

A native of Oconee County, Mr. Davis was the son of the late Ben Howard and Era Mae Medlin Davis. He received his Doctorate in Education. He conquered many things in his career such as, Administrative Assistant at Mott Foundation, Flint Michigan, Supervisor of Adult Education in S.C. Department of Education, Executive Director of Mountain Projects in Jackson and Haywood Counties in NC, Director of Community School Programs in Oconee County, SC and Principal and Superintendent of Cleveland Schools. Mr. Davis taught mathematics at Americas High School in Georgia; while at Americas he coached the boys and girl’s tennis team. At Cleveland he coached the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. While at Americas he was named “Man of the Year” by the Jaycees and again In Oconee County in the Walhalla’s Lion Club. In the early seventies he served on the greater Salvation Army Board. He was a retired mathematics instructor at Trident Technical College in Charleston for over 30 years; he was the Administrator of Dialysis and Transplant Program at the Medical University of SC; Director of Admissions and Chairman of Emery College at Palmer College, Charleston; Executive Director of Special Training and Education Program for the State of Mississippi; and Education Consultant for Folly Publishing Company. He served for four years on the Folly Beach City Council. When the part of the Island became a city, he was appointed by the governor to service as the Folly Island township Commissioner. He served several terms as the Chairman of the Folly Beach Election Commission. Some of his other accomplishments included, being a college mathematics instructor, president, vice president and treasured of the Folly Island Civic Club, member of the Folly Beach Exchange Club, the Salvation Army Advisory Board of Greater Charleston, Heart Sunday Chairman, and Goodwill Industry Member. Mr. Davis was also a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

 

Mr. Davis is survived by his son: Doug Liptak (Marianne); brother: Jimmy Davis (Rita); sisters: Betty Dickard and Dot Long; grandchildren: Ben, Morgan and Sam Liptak; sisters-in-law: Francis Davis and Jane Davis; special niece: Amelia Davis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his sisters: Louise Dickard and Linda Joan Justice; and brothers: Ben and Kenneth Davis.

 

Graveside services will be conducted at 4:00 PM, Monday, October 5, 2020, at Oconee Memorial Park.

 

The family will receive friends from 2:30-3:30 PM, Monday, prior to the service, at Davenport Funeral Home.
