Future school I-D cards to carry new message

In the future, the telephone number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will appear on student identification cards for both public and private school children.  A newly-signed South Carolina law also requires each school to add the social media platform, telephone number, or text number for at least one other resource that best fits the needs of their school or community.  That information won’t show up on Oconee school I-D cards this coming year.  Steve Hanvey, associate superintendent, says, “We have until next school year to implement that requirement so we will begin then.  We had already ordered our ID cards for this school year.”  The National Suicide Prevention Line provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the U-S.  The Lifeline is comprised of a national network of more than 180 local crisis centers, combining custom local care and resources with national standards and best practices.  The number of the lifeline is 1-800/273-8255.
