Furman recognizes Hazing Prevention Week

A senior at Furman University, Savannah Hobbie, is spearheading events this week at her school for Hazing Prevention Week.  Hobbie is hopeful that change can be made in South Carolina’s hazing laws, and she’s promoting a petition campaign to support change.  “Currently,” she says, “when hazing results severe bodily injury or death, it results in only a misdemeanor in the state of South Carolina.  Currently, I am running a petition to change that law and make hazing when it results in severe bodily injury of death, a felony,” she said.  The petition drive, she reports, attracted 280 signatures in 24 hours. She’s hopeful the petition drive will reach others not in the Furman community.
