From the council desks, compliments to the public schools

For a couple of reasons, the leaders of Oconee public schools are receiving compliments from the county council.  Many years ago, an Oconee leader who sat on both sides often referred to contentious budget issues involving the schools and county government as “the rites of spring” in Oconee County.  But not these times in the 21st century.  With the expectation that            growth in the county’s tax base will be adequate to offset higher spending for the public schools, school leaders yesterday were complimented by county councilmen, such as Matthew Durham and John Elliott, the chair of the council’s budget and finance committee.  Elliott and Durham explained they are appreciative of the way the local school district has managed its finances in the time of the world pandemic.  They also congratulated the district for its decision to conduct in-class instruction which Durham sees as a help to the local economy, as people tend to get out and spend money.
