Four witnesses testify for the prosecution

At 1:30 this afternoon, defendant Misty Edwards will be required to announce whether she will take the stand in her defense in the Oconee General Sessions Court. Edwards went on trial this morning, charged by the Oconee Sheriff’s Office with unlawful neglect of children. The prosecution finished its case by calling four witnesses—two DSS workers and two sheriff’s officers. The last of the four to testify, Sgt. Barry Owens, told the jury that, on a summer morning in 2017, he saw two toddlers crawl out of a Westminster area home and, he said, he later had trouble arousing Edwards from sleeping in the home. Owens said the infants wore “soiled, soggy, and droopy” diapers, and he observed unsanitary conditions in the home.
