Four-mile extension of Palmetto Trail opens near Walhalla

Hikers and mountain bike riders may now use a new section of the Palmetto Trail near Walhalla. Four miles of the planned extension of the mountains to see trail opened yesterday when the Walhalla mayor cut a ribbon as part of a celebratory occasion that brought together city and county leaders, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts to Walhalla’s Stumphouse Tunnel Park. Eventually, the trail will chart a passage south and wind up on the ground of Walhalla’s Community Park and Depot at Kaufman Square. Yesterday several bike riders and hikers were quick to line up to sample the newly-opened section. One of them was Jim Kelly who, as a member of the Palmetto Conservation Corps put some of his energy into clearing the trail for public use.
