Five-decade mystery solved in Greenville County

The remains of an unknown man found dead in 1975 in Greenville County, at last, have been identified.  The Greenville County sheriff, Hobart Lewis, says the man formerly known as “Mr. X” was actually New York City area resident Oscar James Nedd.  And Lewis says the credit goes to Brad Willis’ podcast “Murder, Etc.” for drawing attention to the cold case.  When he took office in 2020, Lewis revamped the cold case unit of his office and partnered with the Greenville Coroner’s Office to exhume the body from Potters Field in northern Greenville County.  The skeletal remains were sent to “NAMUS” — the National Unidentified and Missing Persons System — for DNA tests.  In February this year, Greenville investigators were contacted by the White Plains Police Department about a match for a missing person case that the White Plains police had been working on since ’75.  And that person was Oscar James Nedd.  He was a victim of homicide.  It’s believed Nedd was killed in New York, and the case has now been sent to that jurisdiction.
