Finding a place for tiny homes

Walhalla’s elected leaders are on their way to find a place for tiny homes.  Last night they gave preliminary approval to permitting homes of up to 500 square feet in size by requiring a special exception to the zoning ordinance and restricting them to general- residential zones in the city.  For some prospective homeowners, tiny or container-type housing is appealing because of lower costs and less space to maintain.  At the same time, as explained by Mayor Edwards, restricting them to general-residential affords protection to homeowners within residential zones requiring lot sizes such as 10 and 15 thousand square feet.  Approved last night on a first reading, the tiny home ordinance will require a second reading which will allow the council more time to consider the zoning action.
