FBI fields thousands of cybercrime complaints

In the thousands, South Carolinians are complaining that they’ve been the victims or attempted victims of crimes that are committed by typing out characters on keyboards.  According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, there were 4,541 complaints from South Carolina filed with the FBI’s Internet Crime Report in 2019.  That number represents the highest number of cybercrime complaints to the FBI and the highest dollar losses.  Phishing and similar ploys, non-payment/non-delivery scams, and extortion were the most frequently reported complaints.  Most costly are complaints on business email compromises, romance or confidence fraud, and spoofing–criminals posing as a known, trusted source.  The state Department of Revenue takes cybersecurity seriously and wants to help South Carolinians protect themselves at work and at home.  For tips, visit dor.sc.gov/securitycenter.
