Fatty and salty foods to make comback in schools?

The specter of a return to more fat and salty foods at expense of fruits and other healthful food items has been raised by the revelation last week of proposed changes by the USDA, which governs food service programs in the public schools. The changes, so far, remain in the proposal stage. Nevertheless, Chairman Jerry Lee of the Oconee School Trustees is aware of the possibility, though he has heard nothing yet from the district’s food provider, the Sodexo Company. “Hopefully, it will improve all the way around. Our folks do a great job of serving good meals and healthy meals, and I don’t foresee that changing,” Lee told 101.7/WGOG NEWS. One reason the agriculture department is pursuing the changes is that some food, which students choose not to eat, is going to waste.
