Ed Watkins, Sr.

Westminster- Clifton Edward “Ed” Watkins, Sr., 89, husband of Betty Land Watkins, passed away Tuesday, January 5th, 2021, at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital.

 

Born March 5th, 1931, in Oconee County, Ed was the son of the late Martin D. and Mary Cobb Watkins, Sr. Ed was a United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict, while stationed in Germany. Mr. Watkins was a graduate of Clemson College in 1954 and married the love of his life Betty Land Watkins in 1952.  Ed retired as the owner and operator of Watkins Grocery where he was known for his giving spirit and his willingness to always help others. Mr. Watkins served the city of Westminster as mayor from 1968-1972 and 1974-1976 and city council from 1964-1966, and was a dedicated member of Westminster Baptist Church, where he was a charter member of the Cecil T. Sandifer Sunday School Class, and served as a former deacon.  

 

Ed is survived by his beloved wife Betty Land Watkins of 68 years, son, Clifton Edward Watkins Jr and wife Connie of Denton, TX; son in law, Tommy Bindrim; eight grandchildren, Amelia Torres (Hervey), Grant Watkins (Jaci), Thomas Bindrim, Anna Joy Bindrim, Sarah Grace Bindrim, Lily Hope Bindrim, Aleeah Faith Bindrim, Miriam Rose Bindrim; three great-grandchildren, Milo Torres, Lila Torres, and Weston Watkins.

 

The family of Ed Watkins would like to express their gratitude and compassion to;

niece, Kay Hudson (Rick); special son, John Hoover (Susan); and special friends, Juanita Stewart, Alfonzo, and Jeremiah, and many other beloved friends and church family for their support and love during this time.

 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Kay Watkins Bindrim; brothers, William J. Watkins and Martin “Jack” Watkins; sister, Rosemary Trammell. Ed was the last surviving member of his family.

 

A service will be held at a later date, where Ed Watkins and his daughter, Kay Bindrim will be laid to rest at First Baptist Memorial Park.
