Economy gains traction, says state official

Today’s report on jobless claims shows that, for the first time since pandemic started, South Carolina first-time claims have dropped below 13,000.  And, among the places where there have been fewer claims, is Oconee County.  For the week ended last Saturday, Oconee’s number was 190.  The numbers prompt the director of employment and workforce, Dan Ellzey, to say, “Our economy is gaining traction as business owners re-open with strict safety protocols, recall their workforces and recruit new employees.”  Ellzey also said, “It is important for all people receiving South Carolina unemployment benefits to understand that they will receive their last payment of the weekly FPUC (Federal Unemployment Compensation) $600 this week.  Ellzey concedes, however, debate is taking place in Washington over a possible extension.
