DSS alert about possible phishing scam

South Carolina DSS has detected the possibility that someone is fraudulently sending emails to induce the recipients to give out personal information. The tactic is called phishing, and the target appears to be recipients of “SNAP”—the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—and “TANF”—the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It’s believed these scammers threaten people with arrest. DSS has reported possible scams to authorities and is cooperating in the investigation. At times, DSS workers may request South Carolinians to confirm personal information over the phone. But they don’t threaten arrests, ask for credit card or bank account information. If you get a call you believe is a fake, hang up and contact your local DSS office. You can report a suspected scam call at 803/898-1437 or [email protected].
