Defense witness: “This is very rare”

A defense witness testified this morning by video tape that a condition causing sudden but painless loss of vision is “very rare” and he believes it was reasonable for Oconee emergency room doctor Miles McGuff to have considered a detached retina as a working diagnosis. The jury has heard testimony documenting central retina artery occlusion as the cause for the left eye blindness with which plaintiff Camille Hess awoke on June 6, 2014. Today, ophthalmologist Dr. George Waring was allowed to testify as an expert witness in his field, as day five got underway in the Oconee Courthouse civil trial that alleges medical malpractice by McGuff and the Oconee Medical Center. Waring, questioned by hospital attorney Clark Price, said he drew his conclusions after having reviewed the medical records of plaintiff Hess and the deposition testimony of nine other witnesses. The ophthalmologist testified there’s no effective treatment for what happened to Hess.
