COVID-19 scam under probe in Oconee

It didn’t take long for a scammer to think of way to take advantage of virus epidemic. Oconee Sheriff’s Office wants county residents aware of a potential scam. The sheriff’s public information office was told today that a county resident received a call from something called the Coronavirus Hotline that purported that if someone were on Medicare the Medicare recipient would be eligible for a test kit. The caller spoke with an accent and wanted the Oconeean’s address, phone numbers, Social Security info, and the name of the Oconeean’s spouse. The county resident did not provide any information to the caller. Master deputy Jimmy Watt says, “Scammers will use any trick in the book….to steal someone’s personal, identifying information.” As for COVID-19, it’s the Sheriff’s Office recommendation that you follow the protocol and guideline recommendations from the CDC.
