Coroner believed he had disgraced his position

On the morning of August 23, in a phone call to the county administrator, an upset Oconee Coroner Karl Addis told Administrator Brock that he had disgraced his position as coroner with an error of judgment.  This led to Addis’s admission to an extra-marital affair, part of which was conducted inside his office next to the hospital.  At one point, Addis considered resigning.  These disclosures are contained in the release yesterday of the state police’s case file to determine if the coroner had committed a crime.  “SLED’s investigation cleared Addis of criminal wrongdoing, and a special prosecutor subsequently declined to pursue charges.  Solicitor Stumbo’s conclusion was that while Addis’s actions were inappropriate, they did not rise for a prosecution of misconduct in office.  The released case file, part of which is redacted, includes “SLED” memoranda of interviews with Addis, Sheriff Crenshaw, and Administrator Brock.
