Chemical reaction leads to explosion near West Union

Four people were sent to the hospital late last night after a household chemical reaction led to an explosion near West Union. Early this morning there was no word on their conditions. A host of public safety responders, including Walhalla Fire Department, responded to an address on the Burns Mill Road where, according to Chief Burton, affected areas of the home required de-contamination. According to Burton, residents there were mixing pool shock chemicals. One of the chemicals reacted violently with another. Burton says anyone handling household cleaners should be careful. Read and follow all manufacturer labels and directions. As COVID-19 requires more people to remain at home, the chances increase for household accidents. Everyone is urged to be careful with cleaners, chemicals, ladders, electrical equipment and outdoor power equipment.
