An Oconee jail guard has won a top honor at the state Criminal Justice Academy. Detention officer Robert Chasteen graduated last Friday from the Basic Detention Program at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Chasteen was one of 43 graduates. The Bert Friday award goes to the individual with the highest overall academic average.

Meantime, enrollment at the high school nearest Walhalla—-the Tamassee-Salem Middle/High School was 251. That’s a 14% drop from what it was a year ago, according to numbers released today by the Oconee School District.

Tennessee native Robert Sitzlar was named today the new district ranger for the Andrew Pickens District at Mountain Rest. Sitzlar is to succeed the retired Mike Crane the middle part of next month. He comes to South Carolina from Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest, where he has worked for nearly 10 years.

Westminster voters are to get a choice for mayor this fall. Oconee Elections announces the candidacy of Brian Ramey of Evans Street. Ramey’s candidacy made official today places him, so far, in a race November 3 against the incumbent, Rick McCormick.
