Calls for an additional shelter
At its meeting, Oconee County Council heard calls for a task force that can address Oconee County’s homeless problem. And the suggestion that one homeless shelter, the one in downtown Seneca, may not be enough. Margaret Harper, a former longtime Red Cross volunteer, called for the creation of a task force to work toward alleviating homelessness, and she received thumbs up from at least two county councilmen. Harper related how troubling it was for her to see a couple of situations at Seneca. One was the vicinity of a shopping center where a homeless camp was established; the other was a man she saw laying on a bench outside the hospital and felt had been ignored for too long. Councilmen Cain and Durham expressed appreciation for Harper’s remarks and indicated a task force might be the proper step to take, although Durham called homeless a complicated problem.
