Callas Mountain fire 50% contained

No major growth has been assessed in two-day old Callas Mountain fire north of Walhalla and, according to the U-S Forest Service, the fire is 50% contained.  On Wednesday, the first estimated acreage loss was 125 acres; aerial-infrared yesterday showed 37.5 acres destroyed.  The wildfire is on highway 28 about 2.5 miles northwest of Mountain Rest and 3.5 miles from the Georgia line and Russell Bridge.  Smoke is visible from the highway, and the public is advised to avoid the area, if possible, until emergency personnel and vehicles have 100% containment. Among the resources applied to this fire fighting effort:  one helicopter; one jumper module; three engines, one dozer, and miscellaneous fire management personnel.
