Cain and Cammick speak out about “Lot #8”

Two members of Oconee County Council spoke to 101.7/WGOG NEWS yesterday about the likelihood that the city of Clemson will annex a small part of the Hartwell Village Shopping Center located in Oconee County adjacent to Lake Hartwell. Both Paul Cain and Edda Cammick expressed their disappointment, but conceded there appears little that can be done to stop the annexation. The property involved is set aside for a large condo project. Cammick, the council chairwoman, said, “…the county doesn’t really have a say in this. If the property owner agrees, the municipality agrees, and the necessary conditions are met, there isn’t much we can do and we are left with our disappointment.” She added, “The condos will be marketed to Clemson families, alumni, and Tiger fans. It was no surprise they would want to become part of Clemson. Having said that, we welcome them.” Paul Cain expressed similar comments. Seneca is positioned to provide water but requires new, out of city customers to agree that should Seneca corporate limits ever become contiguous they by agreement would consent to be annexed. Cain said he’s mindful of Seneca’s situation. He said, “While we welcome investment in Oconee County, we certainly would prefer to protect our existing municipalities, such as the city of Seneca which district I represent….”
