Betty Caldwell

Betty England Bennett Caldwell, 87, went to heaven on March 2, 2024. She was a strong Christian woman who loved her family, loved her dog and loved her church. She leaves behind 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren (and one on the way). She had achieved a Masters degree in education and worked many years in the public school system. Following her teaching career she had a second career as a real estate agent in Myrtle Beach, SC. She spent the final years of her life in Boiling Springs, SC.

Born in Greenville, SC July 23, 1936, Betty grew up in Westminster, SC and Asheville, NC. She graduated high school in Asheville. She recounted many tales of playing with her cousins in Westminster. She was an artist and used several different media to display her talents in drawing, painting and sculpture. Betty was an actress and appeared in a number of plays. She was well-schooled in Latin and would take the time to define words to her children based on their Latin roots. Betty loved football; not so much soccer. She loved her grandchildren and absolutely adored her great-grandchildren. She always had a dog present in the house; if one passed she quickly replaced it. She attended St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Boiling Springs, SC for many years.

Betty is pre-deceased by her parents Thomas D. Bennett and Lucy E. Bennett, her brother Jim Bennett (Barbara, now deceased) and great-granddaughter Mary Louise Maughan. Betty leaves behind her children William E. Caldwell IV (Jody), Elizabeth C. Maughan (Chris, now deceased), and Nancy C. Heizer (Roy), grandchildren Nicholas B. Caldwell (Francie), Caroline C. Goodroe (Nathan), Stephen A. Maughan (Alex), C. Alexander Maughan (Kellie), and Michael R. Maughan, and 8 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 11 am Thursday, March 7, 2024 at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Highway 9, Boiling Springs, SC 29316. This is to be followed by graveside service at 3 pm at East View Cemetery in Westminster, SC.
