The building that served as a small Oconee town’s public school is no more. West Union Mayor Linda Oliver said the contractor hired by the town finished demolishing the dilapidated brick building shortly before 1:30 p-m Friday. A group that tried to save the building for preservation and new use plans to put up an official state historic marker nearby.

Oconee County is targeting a date to “light up” FOCUS–the project to bring high-speed broadband service countywide. Paul Corbeil, District One county councilman, says the projected date is four months away–Friday, March 15, 2013. The county’s public schools are already beginning to switch to the service, according to Dr. Mike Lucas, county superintendent.

This just in….A 60-year old resident of Fowood Hills near Westminster was this morning’s traffic fatality on S.C. 11. Coroner Karl Addis said Guy Arvid Nelson died in the accident involving his pickup truck and other vehicles shortly after 6:30 a-m at S.C. 11 and Bruce Road.

A new finance director has gone to work for Oconee County government. Mark Pulliam, a former finance director for the University of Montana, began work as Oconee finance director a couple of weeks ago. He’ll be paid $80 thousand a year.
