Former school building on the ground

The building that served as a small Oconee town’s public school is no more. West Union Mayor Linda Oliver said the contractor hired by the town finished demolishing the dilapidated brick building shortly before 1:30 p-m Friday. A group that tried to save the building for preservation and new use plans to put up an official state historic marker nearby.

Oconee County is targeting a date to “light up” FOCUS–the project to bring high-speed broadband service countywide. Paul Corbeil, District One county councilman, says the projected date is four months away–Friday, March 15, 2013. The county’s public schools are already beginning to switch to the service, according to Dr. Mike Lucas, county superintendent.
