Are there enough mental health counselors for students?

Gov. McMaster and the South Carolina Department of Mental Health and Human Services report progress in school-based mental health counselors for students.  A September 2023 survey showed the number doubled statewide to 1,209 at the start of the school year, from 600 in January 2022.  Across the Oconee district, officials say, there are seven counselors — one for every 1,400 students.  Steve Hanvey, associate superintendent, says, “We also have access to support in multiple languages through a company called Gaggle.”  A group of Boston-based consultants determined 77%, more than three of every four, of South Carolina youngsters with depressive episodes do not receive any mental health treatment.
