Adger Carroll

Adger B. Carroll, 84, of Florence, SC, husband of Faye Corbett Carroll, passed away on January 25, 2021 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Born in Oakway, SC on October 15, 1936, he was the son of the late John Henry Carroll and Genevieve Simpson Carroll. He was a graduate of Clemson University, and also received a PhD in Agricultural Economics from North Carolina State University. He started his career with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, followed by a position as a professor at N.C. State and later Clemson before joining the Cooperative Extension Service at Clemson in 1972.  In 1977 he took a leadership position in Extension at Michigan State University, where he worked for 16 years prior to retirement.  During his years with the Extension Service, he focused on building stronger communities and tackling the challenges of economic and resource development to improve peoples’ lives.  In the early 1970’s, he was involved with an initiative to address economic deprivation on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, after the attention it received following the publishing of “The Water is Wide” by Pat Conroy and the motion picture “Conrack.” He later made a point to visit field offices in all 83 of Michigan’s counties in the upper and lower peninsulas as part of his work at Michigan State.

He retired to Florence, South Carolina in 1996.  In retirement, he volunteered in a program to help juvenile offenders navigate the criminal justice system, and also enjoyed his lifelong passion for golf, playing daily rounds with his local league, achieving the coveted “hole-in-one” on more than one occasion.  His other passion was cheering on his beloved alma mater Clemson in football, and in his later years was delighted to see them win their second and third national championships.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his son Aubrey B. Carroll of Florence, sister-in-law Andrea Faye Dorr Carroll of Westminster, nephews Mark Milton Carroll, Johnny Lemmons, Michael Carroll, Douglas Carroll and Stephen Carroll; and nieces Millicent Marie Carroll Pollock, Linda Convertino, and Barbara Ostland
