Additional discount stores not welcome for six months

It is now official.  City of Walhalla has pulled the welcome mat for any new discount store within the corporate limits for at least six months, while a review of the zoning law is undertaken.  On a unanimous vote and only one question from the audience at last night’s meeting, the city council gave final reading to a six-month moratorium that temporarily suspends accepting or issuing any permit and license for new discount stores.  What brought this to a head in city government is the belief that Dollar General had expressed interest in building within the downtown core commercial district, a prospect that concerned many supporters of downtown re-vitalization.  A member of the audience asked about whether discount stores might be able to locate in the city after six months.
