Man Drowns at Lake Jocassee During Weekend Outing

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis reported that Gustavo Ivan Hernandez-Cardenas, a 30-year-old from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, drowned at Devils Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee last Saturday, August 17th. Emergency personnel responded around 5:30 p.m. after bystanders pulled Hernandez-Cardenas from the lake and began CPR. Despite continued resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m. at Prisma Greenville Memorial Hospital. Hernandez-Cardenas, who was in Upstate South Carolina for training at the BMW Greer Plant, was at the lake with friends for an outing. His death has been ruled accidental due to freshwater drowning.
