Seneca counteroffer approved

After closed-door deliberations, Oconee school trustees accepted a city of Seneca counteroffer to sell the former middle school.  Officials say the city’s counteroffer amounts to $200 thousand.  The board vote was 4-1, with Dr. Sandra Sloan opposed.  Sloan, the Seneca board member, did not explain her position – although it’s believed she felt there shouldn’t have been a financial consideration.  At the start of last night’s open session, Chairman Matthew Durham of the Oconee County Council, accompanied by District Three councilman Don Mize, urged the trustees to transfer the building and the property for Seneca’s use.  Here’s Durham’s position: “Does not matter whose name is on the side of the building. The building belongs to the taxpayers of the county.  The school district should’ve transferred the building to the city rather than making Seneca taxpayers purchase the building again.”
